Building practical AI capability for the future of higher education procurement

PURCO SA recently brought together 80 procurement professionals from across its 66 member institutions for an applied AI Data Analysis and Executive Report Writing training programme.

The programme went beyond simply learning how to use AI tools. Delegates worked through a practical, end-to-end approach to using AI responsibly, analytically and purposefully — from understanding the question and protecting organisational data, to analysing evidence and communicating findings in a way that supports better decisions.

Three key capabilities were developed throughout the programme:

1. Turning data into communication that supports the right decision
Delegates learnt how to tailor analysis and communication to different audiences, identify the key message and turn evidence into clear, actionable recommendations for greater communication impact.

2. Using organisational data safely and responsibly with AI
Participants learnt how to protect sensitive information and maintain traceability back to source information using Excel skills, and in doing so, ensure that human judgement and accountability remain central to AI-supported work.

3. Using AI as an analytical assistant, not a substitute for judgement
Delegates learnt how to interrogate data, test assumptions, identify meaningful patterns, validate findings and ask better follow-up questions to ensure data and narrative accuracy.

Why does this matter for PURCO SA members, today?

Procurement teams across higher education manage significant institutional resources, supplier relationships, compliance requirements and operational risks. As AI becomes more accessible, the opportunity is not simply to work faster, but to strengthen the quality of analysis, improve decision-making and communicate procurement insights more effectively.

These capabilities help procurement professionals use emerging technology with greater confidence while remaining accountable for the evidence, decisions and recommendations that affect their institutions.

And while the frameworks provided the foundation, the real value came from seeing delegates apply them, challenge outputs, collaborate and reflect on how these skills can transfer back into their own institutions.
