Changing behaviour, risk and reward through shared value. Lessons from the Vitality programme.
Deon Kotze, Head of Discovery Health Research and Development
Discovery's Vitality programme has achieved global success in improving individual health outcomes while reducing costs. Discovery learnt that people seldom make good choices when it comes to their health - they think in the short term and discount the future. Recognising this, the Vitality programme incentivises people to make better choices that make them healthier. Through a shared value approach that offers rewards and discounts to promote behaviour changes, health outcomes have improved and healthcare costs have come down 25% for those engaged in the model. Technology is a key enabler and the programme makes extensive use of data analytics to understand behaviour and promote change. The objective of this presentation is to share lessons and insights from Vitality, so that delegates can consider whether a shared value, incentivised approach in the higher education procurement sector could improve purchasing outcomes for users while driving reductions in university procurement costs.
